Sasha Hernandez, MD

OB/GYN Team Leader, AMPATH Ghana

Dr. Sasha Hernández, OB/GYN Team Leader, has a deep commitment to improving access to equitable women’s health care through her work with sustainable and bidirectional global health programs that value community engagement and capacity training of local health providers. When she found those shared values in AMPATH and learned more about AMPATH’s tripartite mission of care, research, and education she was excited to be the inaugural OB/GYN Team Lead for AMPATH Ghana.

Dr. Hernández looks forward to implanting the AMPATH mission in northern Ghana where she will be closely working with medical students during their clinical rotations and OB/GYN residents. She hopes to focus on ultrasound training, simulation based learning, and gynecologic surgery quality improvement during her time as a Team Lead.

Dr. Hernández earned her MD from Weill Cornell Medical College where she graduated with Honors in Research for her work with traditional birth attendants in rural Guatemala. She completed her OB/GYN residency at New York University Medical Center where she gained valuable clinical experience caring for highly underserved and newly immigrated women at Bellevue Hospital, New York City’s historic public hospital. Over the last decade, she has worked in improving access to equitable care for women via program implantation and capacity building of frontline health workers in India, Ecuador, Guatemala, and the Dominican Republic.
