CARE
AMPATH Ghana is partnering with TTH, UDS-SoM, and Ghana Health Service to co-design a comprehensive Chronic Disease Management program focused initially on: hypertension, diabetes, cervical cancer, and mental health.
Through the AMPATH Ghana partnership, much needed medicine and supplies for ongoing diseases and illnesses are being supplied to UDS-SoM and its associated clinics.
The urgency of the COVID-19 pandemic led to four areas of engagement for the AMPATH Ghana partnership: providing PPE, clinical COVID-19 management, supporting enhanced COVID-19 diagnostics, and informing COVID-19 vaccine distribution efforts.
EDUCATION
UDS-SoM and NYUGSOM have collaborated to provide online supplementary lectures to medical students on internal medicine, OB/GYN, surgery, anesthesiology, and neurology.
AMPATH Ghana is establishing the Tamale Education and InnovAtion Center for Health Professionals (TEACH), a Regional Center of Excellence in clinical skills training to improve and modernize the educational infrastructure, standardize and improve curricular and pedagogical approaches, and incorporate state-of-the-art simulation equipment.
AMPATH Ghana has supported bilateral trainee exchange with 4 medical students from UDS completing clinical rotations at NYULMC and Bellevue Hospital. US residents in Ob/Gyn, medicine, neurology, and surgery have completed clinical rotations at TTH.
RESEARCH
AMPATH Ghana’s research on extreme heat and climate change will help identify a multidisciplinary, multi-sectoral collaborative effort that spans education, research, and practical implementation, to assist community resilience to the impacts of climate change and extreme heat.
A newly developed infrastructure assessment strategy is informing future research partnerships and collaborations for AMPATH Ghana.
AMPATH Ghana is conducting a comprehensive Community Health Needs and Resources Assessment of the catchment area for UDS-SoM and TTH that will help AMPATH Ghana to develop and implement community-informed health improvement programs and services.
Where we work
Ghana is located on the west coast of Africa with approximately 30 million residents, 70 percent of whom live in rural and semi-rural areas with limited access to health care. At the center of AMPATH efforts in Ghana is the UDS School of Medicine and Tamale Teaching Hospital, which serve 8 million Ghanaians and others in the northern part of the country. These institutions were established to address the need for high-quality care in an area with a persistent lack of qualified healthcare personnel and funding.
